What to Expect from a Moore Media Internship

You will be mentored through the fast-paced agency environment and will assist the wider team with tasks such as social media campaigns, digital content creation, web design, newsletter design and content, campaign planning, campaign tracking and monitoring, event management, and data/insight analysis and reporting. You will play a vital role in the team, as unexpected opportunities for PR or social media posts often arise due to global events—quick reactions are our specialty.

You will assist our marketing team with tasks that are part of daily agency life. This will include working with a wide range of clients from industries such as healthcare and life sciences, the built environment, charity and the third sector, professional services, places, and energy and net zero. Each sector has its own unique strategy, which we follow to produce marketing and PR materials, while also analysing campaign performance using analytical metric platforms like Semrush and Google Analytics.

The job market is more competitive than ever, and marketing and communications are highly sought-after industries. We also recognise that unpaid work experience and internships aren’t an option for everyone. Students with part-time jobs or caring responsibilities may not have the same opportunities as those who can afford to work for free. We have also taken on one of our Discovery interns in a full-time role as a Communications Assistant after their studies. Izzy shared her experience:

I went into my Discovery internship to do just that—discover. I wanted to find out what aspects of communication I enjoyed the most. This led me to secure an internship at Moore Media, and sure enough, I found out very quickly where my strengths and preferences lay through the mentorship and guidance of the team. The opportunity eventually led me to securing a full-time position. An internship is the time to define where you flourish, learn how you can excel, and source future opportunities available to you.”

 

Transferable Skills in PR & Marketing with No Prior Experience

As a student, you develop many soft skills such as time management, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, critical thinking, and adaptability. Just because you don’t have direct marketing experience doesn’t mean you lack transferable skills.

For example, time management is a crucial skill for marketers, as they often create, schedule, and optimise posts for multiple clients at once. This requires attention to detail and the ability to multitask.

Marketing also thrives on teamwork and strong communication. A typical campaign may involve a strategist generating content ideas, a copywriter creating engaging text, and a designer producing graphics to accompany the social media posts. Collaboration is key.

Because marketing can be unpredictable, adaptability is essential. Tasks may shift quickly, and team members must be ready to jump from one responsibility to another to assist with upcoming projects. The ability to respond efficiently and meet deadlines is a valuable skill.

 

Making a Great First Impression

We spoke with Izzy about how she prepared for her interview and application, which caught our eye. She shared her approach to internship applications:

I conducted in-depth and analytical research. First, I explored Moore Media’s social channels and website, as well as the directors’ personal LinkedIn profiles. This helped me identify where they excelled in social posts and any potential areas for improvement that I could mention in the interview. I also reviewed their website to familiarise myself with their brand and looked at past campaigns they had worked on. I identified particular materials I admired and areas I was eager to learn more about. I also researched any recent award wins I could mention in conversation.

To prepare more broadly, I searched for common questions asked in media agency interviews and rehearsed my answers. I made sure to mention any platforms I was familiar with, such as Canva, Wix, and HubSpot, to show the breadth of my knowledge. I also demonstrated my interest in the industry by referencing recent social media and PR campaigns that impressed me. One particular example was the BP oil spill crisis communication campaign. 

My advice to others is: if you have prior experience, don’t be afraid to show it! This could be a social media post you created or materials produced during university. It demonstrates passion and initiative. Outline your strengths, and you’ll go into the interview feeling confident in your abilities.”

What We Look for in an Interview

We know that interviews can be nerve-wracking. We aren’t looking for the most confident candidate but rather for someone who brings substance to their answers. Stay engaged, listen carefully to each question, and take a moment to think before responding if needed. Bring your best and most authentic self to the interview, it will show. Dress smartly but in a way that reflects your personal style. Being well-prepared will help you feel more confident and at ease.

 

How to Be a Standout Applicant

Be creative! Your application doesn’t have to follow a rigid format. Let it reflect your personality and strengths. A lighthearted, conversational tone allows us to see the person behind the words. You might include a link to a portfolio of your work or your LinkedIn page. It doesn’t have to be just text, make it your own, and your passion will shine through.

We understand that AI isn’t going anywhere, and there are ways to use it effectively without becoming over-reliant. AI can help you articulate your thoughts and identify key skills. Use it as a tool to enhance your application, but remember, we like to see that human touch.
