Oman’s Vision for Urban Transformation: Jayne Moore’s Reflections from Muscat

Fresh from a whirlwind trip to the beautiful city of Muscat, I find myself reflecting on a truly inspiring few days in Oman, a country that has left a lasting impression not only through its visionary approach to urban planning but also through the warmth of its people and the beauty of its capital.

I’ve had the privilege of travelling to some incredible destinations, but this visit to Oman, as a guest of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, has been particularly special. With each conversation, I found myself more and more impressed by the energy, ambition and heart behind what’s being built here.

The highlight of my trip was attending the Oman Real Estate Conference. I’d been really looking forward to it, not just to hear about the Ministry’s bold plans for the country’s future, but also to reconnect with some of the brilliant Ministry representatives I met at MIPIM this year. It was a pleasure to pick up those conversations, see some familiar faces, and take a deeper look at the exciting direction Oman is heading in with its urban regeneration plans.

The Greater Muscat Strategic Plan is nothing short of remarkable, a visionary blueprint that reimagines the future of Oman’s capital region. Designed to support sustainable growth, economic diversification, and enhanced quality of life, the plan outlines a bold transformation of the city through smart infrastructure, integrated transport systems, and vibrant, liveable urban centres.

What’s truly striking is the scale and pace at which the Ministry is bringing these new cities and districts to life, blending innovation with a deep respect for Oman’s cultural heritage. It was an honour to hear first-hand about this ambition and progress from such passionate and dedicated leaders. A heartfelt thank you to Badar Al Shukaili, Monika Bik, Nasser Alsayegh, and Waleed Alwaheibi for your warm welcome, insight, and generous hospitality.

A particular highlight of the week was meeting new friends at F&M Middle East Engineering Consultancy. Thank you to Hazem Abdul Karim, Katleen Roxas, and Nayara Pinho, your energy and innovative projects were a joy to learn about and left me feeling genuinely inspired.

And finally, a small but unforgettable moment, thank you, Badar, for introducing me to what I now consider one of life’s little luxuries: that perfect Açai bowl. Pure bliss!

As I leave Oman, I do so with a heart full of gratitude and a mind buzzing with ideas and admiration. I feel privileged to have witnessed a glimpse of Oman’s bold vision.

Until next time, Oman. You have been truly wonderful.
